The concept of a music channel has been around for a long time, where major record companies began supplying broadcasters with promotional clips of upcoming music. HBO also had a 30 minute program of music videos, HBO would occasionally play a few music videos between movies.

As popularity rose, and record companies realised the potential of the medium to gain promotion, they began to create longer clips specifically for the channel.

During the 1990s, the channel began Dial MTV, a daily top ten music video countdown show where viewers could request a music video.

Also during the 1990s, MTV was playing a concoction of pop-friendly hard rock acts, such as such as Michael Jackson, Madonna and New kids on the block.
